Developing a Quality Life in Cedar County, Iowa

Good Work

October 7, 2015

The investmensts we make in our community today has profund imact on our tomorrows.  No where more  does this hold true then when we invest in ourselves.  This Fall, according to Nanci Young of the Workplace Learning Connection, high school students from Cedar County are doing just that.  They applied for a Job shadow experience through Kirkwood’s Workplace Learning Connection.  In fact, 107 students in North Cedar, Tipton and West Branch submitted applications.   The career requests ranged from Accounting to Welding, but there were some trends worth mentioning.

35 Cedar County high schoolers will explore a job where they can help people in the pathway of Family and Human Services.  Some of these jobs are teachers, law enforcement officials, and mental health care providers.

27 Cedar County students requested a Job Shadow in the field of Health Sciences, such as Nursing, Physical Therapy and Physicians’ Assistant.

8 Cedar County teens expressed an interest in the field of Veterinary Science, with an interest in learning how to care for large and small animals.

Each year, WLC reaches out to Cedar County businesses to participate in several career exploration activities.  This year is no different.  If you would like your company to be involved, contact WLC’s, Laura Kowalski-Bliss at laura.kowalski-bliss@kirkwood.edu
